How to choose the business to start
A practical way to pick a business that fits the skills, capital and customers you already have in Kenya.

Start with what you can already do
Most successful small businesses in Kenya begin with a skill the owner already has, not with an idea copied from the internet. Before you look at business plans, write down the work people already pay you for, or ask you for help with.
Three questions that narrow the list
- What can I do well enough that someone would pay me today?
- Who already buys this service in my town, and where do they find it?
- What is the smallest amount of money I need to take the first paying customer?
Check the demand, not the trend
Talk to ten people who fit your customer. Ask what they currently pay, who they pay and what goes wrong. If they cannot name a price or a provider, the demand is not proven yet.
Pick one guide and follow it
Every Self Employment Kenya guide is built around the same structure: the opportunity, services, pricing, suppliers, a 30-day marketing plan and a 90-day launch plan. Choose the business closest to your skill, read the whole guide once, then work through the 30-day plan with a real customer in mind.
A simple test before you spend
Sell the service once, manually, before you spend on equipment or a shop. If one customer pays and you deliver well, you have a business to grow. If nobody pays, you have saved yourself the cost of finding out the hard way.
